When I left the Navy after 20 years, I was like many veterans: anxious about starting a new career and concerned about how my skills would translate to corporate America. However, it did not take long for me to realize that my new career was similar to my military career.

Though the terms changed, the core values did not. Dedication to the mission, teamwork, focus, and leadership in the face of challenges remained cherished traits. Flagstar has embraced my military background, and my team is focused on delivering for our customers, communities, employees, and shareholders.

One of my favorite things about working for Flagstar is their support for veterans and our military. The company and my management were completely supportive when I had to participate in drill weekends and my annual two-week commitment for the Navy Reserves.

Being in the Navy also led me to join the Veterans ERG, which puts together incredible events and presentations highlighting our military for Memorial and Veterans Day every year. 

I am very proud to be a part of a company that fully supports, encourages, and cares for our nation’s veterans.

The core skills I gained in the military have been the key to success in my civilian career as a VA mortgage underwriter. The job requires attention to detail while working effectively under constant pressure. There is little tolerance for errors, and quickly getting through a complicated file is critical. I work independently, think critically, and communicate decisions clearly. 

Being a mortgage underwriter isn’t always easy. On any given day, I’m challenged, audited, praised, and criticized, sometimes all on the same file. Just like in the military, staying positive takes mental toughness. But if you’re looking for a rewarding post-military career in banking, this is a path to consider!
